How home battery storage works

Solar panels make most of their electricity in the middle of the day, and most homes use the least at exactly that hour. A battery is what bridges the gap.

Store your daytime electricity for the evening

During the day, what your panels make beyond what the house is using charges the battery instead of going back to the grid for a few cents. Between 4pm and 9pm, when the family is home and the cooking starts, the house draws from the battery rather than buying at the day rate. That is the hour the battery earns its place.

Buying less at the expensive hours

A battery also lets you shift when you buy. On a day and night rate it can refill when electricity is cheapest and carry you through the evening peak. You run the dishwasher whenever suits you; the battery decides where the electricity comes from.

Built on BYD’s own battery technology

BYD home batteries use cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate, a chemistry chosen for safety and long life. BYD deployed over 60GWh of energy storage in 2025, around 13% of the global market and more than any other company, which is the equivalent of around six million home batteries. The battery carries a 10-year manufacturer's warranty from BYD, which guarantees it will still hold at least 60% of its usable capacity at the end of that term.

What size do I need?

Most Irish homes land between 5 and 15 kWh of usable capacity, which is how much of the battery you can actually use. A kWh is a unit of electricity, the thing your bill counts. The size depends on how many are in the house and whether you charge a car at home. The system is modular, so you can start with what suits you now and add capacity later.
