We built the first VW Beetle outside Germany
Long before solar and batteries, MDL assembled the very first VW Beetle built anywhere in the world outside Germany, right here in Ireland. The same family business stands behind BYD Ireland Energy today.

Motor Distributors Ltd is founded in Dublin by the O'Flaherty family, the start of a tradition of trust still going strong today.
The first Beetle outside Germany
MDL assembles the first VW Beetle built anywhere in the world outside Germany, right here in Ireland.

MDL grows to keep Ireland moving, today supplying 90% of the national ambulance fleet, the ESB and An Post.
BYD comes to Ireland
MDL brings BYD to Irish drivers. BYD deployed over 60GWh of energy storage in 2025, around 13% of the global market and more than any other company.
