Is Solar Worth It in Ireland?

Yes, Ireland gets enough sun

Solar panels run on daylight, not direct sunshine. A well-sited Irish roof produces roughly 900–1,000 kWh per kWp installed every year. Even on overcast days panels keep generating, just at a lower output.

What you'll actually save

With a battery, a typical home offsets a large share of its electricity bill, more for bigger homes that use more power, and more again if you have an EV or heat pump. You're also paid for the surplus you export to the grid.

What about payback?

After the SEAI grant, most homeowners see payback in around 6–8 years, depending on system size, your usage and electricity prices. Panels are warranted for decades and typically last 15–20 years, so the bulk of that lifetime is near-free energy.

When solar is worth it most

You'll get the strongest return if you use electricity during the day, add a battery to shift solar to the evening, or run higher loads like an EV charger or heat pump. The more of your own energy you use, the faster it pays back.
