SEAI solar grants explained (2026)

The SEAI grant is one of the biggest reasons Irish homeowners put panels on the roof, and the figures change, so here is exactly where things stand in 2026.

How much is the SEAI solar grant?

The SEAI Solar Electricity Grant is worth up to €1,800. It is tiered by the size of the system, measured in kWp: €700 per kWp for the first 2 kWp, then €200 per kWp from 2 to 4 kWp, capped at €1,800.

So 2.5 kWp of panels attracts €1,500, and a 4 kWp system reaches the full €1,800 cap. A 3.5 kWp system, which is about eight panels on a 3-bed semi, attracts €1,700.

Is battery storage grant-aided?

No. The grant covers the solar panels only. Battery storage is not covered by it, so a battery is a paid part of the system. It is also the part that lets you use what your roof made in the evening and keep the lights on during an outage, so most homeowners include one.

Who qualifies?

Your home generally needs to have been built and occupied before 31 December 2020. A BER assessment is needed after the install to draw down the grant, and you will need a valid MPRN, which is your meter’s number, printed on your bill. The grant is one per MPRN, so it follows the property rather than you.

How the grant is paid
